Flash, snoot, 50mm y un perfil que dice más que mil palabras.

A lo largo del proyecto 365 varias veces tuve la satisfacción de crear, en mi humilde opinión, buenas fotos.

En este caso en particular, la foto del día 354 surgió como la mayoría de las mejores fotos: espontáneamente.

La idea

Camino al supermercado a comprar algunas cosas para cocinar a la noche, me encuentro con un panadero al costado de la vereda. Cosa rara en la ciudad de Buenos Aires, donde en verdad no abundan. Debatí internamente si tomarlo o no, ya que en cualquier momento podría venir un perro a hacer sus necesidades sobre él. El supermercado cerraba, así que opté por arriesgarme. Por suerte (o no), al regresar, ahí estaba esperándome paciente.

Las cuadras de ida y vuelta a casa sirvieron de disparador para empezar a formar la idea. Todo empezó con un flashback a mi infancia. A los juegos en mi ciudad natal, donde los panaderos estaban por doquier. Fue una sensación muy parecida a esa escena de Ratatouille donde Anton Ego prueba la comida y se transporta a tiempos felices.

Minutos después recordé que mucha gente pide un deseo y luego sopla bien fuerte el panadero para que ese deseo se haga realidad. La idea estaba formada, solo faltaba volver a casa, recoger el panadero y preparar la comida. El tiempo de fotografiar llegaría después de la cena.

La luz

Para esta foto use un flash Nikon SB-900 a 1/32 de potencia, 200mm de zoom y un snoot casero de aproximadamente 25 cm. hecho con cartulina negra. Para eliminar la luz ambiente utilice una velocidad de obturación de 1/250s y una apertura de f/9. El setup inicial fue el siguiente:

Acomodo a mi hija, apoyo el flash sobre la mesa, me pongo en posición y hago algunas pruebas. El resultado inicial era alentador:

Agrego el panadero a la mezcla y empiezan los problemas:

Claramente el flash frente al sujeto no iba a funcionar. El panadero proyectaba una sombra indeseada. Muevo el flash hacia un costado:

El resultado indicaba que no había sido una buena elección:

La cara estaba bien iluminada, pero no así el panadero. Muevo nuevamente el flash, ahora hacia el otro costado. Este es el nuevo setup:

Esta vez la luz es la correcta, pero la modelo no colabora:

La foto

Una vez lograda la luz, solo era cuestión de lograr que la modelo le diera forma final a la imagen que tenía en mente. Hablo con ella, le explico lo que quiero y empiezo a disparar. En uno de los primeros intentos, obtengo esto:

Cuando miro el visor de la cámara, tengo esa sensación única e indescriptible. Ese sentimiento que me dice que acabo de capturar eso que mi mente visualizó e ideó. Pocas veces pasa, pero cuando ocurre, es fantástico.

De todas maneras seguí intentando. Nunca se sabe. Por ahí el futuro nos depara una foto mejor. Con la seguridad de una buena foto ya tomada, siempre es bueno arriesgarse y probar otras cosas. Pero en esta oportunidad no sucedió nada mejor.

La edición

Durante el 365, el 100% de las fotos fueron editadas en Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3. En esta captura de pantalla se pueden ver los ajustes que realicé. Algunos comentarios:

• Saturation: Desaturo completamente la imagen para obtener una foto en B&W.
• Exposure: Corrijo al exposición. La luz parecía más brillante en el visor, pero no así en la pantalla. Las ventajas de usar RAW.
• Contrast: Ajusto el contraste para acentuar aún más la luz en el rostro y el panadero y quitar luz en las zonas del pelo y la mano.
• Clarity: Uno de mis ajustes preferidos. En este caso, logra que la escala de grises en la zona iluminada de la cara sea más extrema. También ayuda a destacar los detalles del panadero.
• Crop: A pesar de que el encuadre original no es malo, quería lograr un desbalance en la foto. La persona pidiendo el deseo en un extremo, superior. El panadero en el otro extremo, el inferior. Linda contradicción, ya que el solo acto de pedir el deseo invierte el balance.
• Black Clipping: Quería acentuar aún más el contraste y hacer más oscura la zona alrededor de la cara, para llevar la atención solo a las zonas iluminadas.
• Shadow Tones: Permite controlar un poco más en detalle la transición desde la luz a las sombras. En este caso, altera levemente esa transición en la cara.
• Light Tones: Permite que solo las zonas iluminadas sean aún más brillantes. Con este ajuste quería darle un toque más irreal, de ensueño, a la fotografía.

El paso final fue exportar a JPEG y aplicar en Photoshop CS5 el filtro Unsharp Mask, porque me gusta más el resultado que ofrece con respecto al Sharpening de Lightroom. El efecto de la edición puede verse claramente si comparamos la imagen inicial y la final:

¿Cómo se llega a aprender a aplicar uno u otro ajuste? Práctica. No hay otra respuesta.

During the 365 project, several times I had the satisfaction of creating, in my humble opinion, good pictures.

In this particular case, the photo of the day 354 came as most of the best photos: spontaneously.

The idea

On the way to the supermarket to buy some stuff to cook at night, I found a dandelion on the side of the sidewalk. A rarity in the city of Buenos Aires. I debated internally whether to take it or not, because at any moment might come a dog and do its dirty stuff over it. The supermarket was about to close, so I decided to take the risk. Fortunately (or not), when I was back, there it was waiting for me.

Walking that blocks served as a trigger to begin shaping the idea. It all started with a flashback to my childhood. Playing in my hometown where the dandelions were everywhere. It felt very similar to that scene where Anton Ego from Ratatouille tastes the food and he’s transported back to happier times.

Minutes later I remembered that many people make a wish and then blow the dandelion, so the wish can become true. The idea was formed, I was back at home to cook. The shooting time would come after dinner.

The light

For this photo I used a Nikon SB-900 at 1/32 power, 200mm zoom and a home-made 25cm snoot made with black cardstock. To kill the ambient light I set the shutter speed to 1/250s and the aperture to f/9. The initial strobist setup was:

I placed my daugther, set the flash on the table, grabbed the camera and I started making some tests. The initial result was encouraging:

I added the dandelion to the mix and the problems began:

Clearly, the flash in front of the subject would not work. The dandelion cast an unwanted shadow. I move the flash to the side:

The result indicated that it was not a good choice:

The face was well lit, but not the dandelion. I moved the flash again, this time to the other side. This was the new setup:

This time the light is great, but the model didn’t help:

The photo

I had the light setup, so it was only a matter of making the model give the final shape to the picture I had in mind. I talked to her, I explained what I wanted and started shooting. In one of the first attempts, I get this shot:

When I look at the viewfinder, I have this unique feeling, indescribable. That feeling told me that I just shot what my mind envisioned. It rarely happens, but when it happens, it’s fantastic.

I kept trying anyway. You never know. Maybe the future will bring a better picture. With the security of a good photo taken, it’s always good to take risks and try other things. But this time nothing better happened.

The post-processing

During the 365, the 100% of my pictures were edited in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3. In this screenshot you can see the adjustments I made. Some comments:

• Saturation: Completely desaturated image to get the picture in B&W.
• Exposure: I fixed the exposure. The light seemed brighter in the viewfinder, but not on the screen. The advantages of using RAW.
• Contrast: Adjusted the contrast to accentuate the light in the face and in the dandelion and reduce the attention in the areas around the hair and hand.
• Clarity: One of my favorite settings. In this case, I wanted the grayscale in the illuminated area of the face to be more extreme. It also helps to highlight the details of the dandelion.
• Crop: Although the original framing was not bad, I wanted to get an unbalanced picture. The person making the wish at one end, at the top. The dandelion at the other end, at the bottom. Nice contradiction, since the mere act of making the wish inverts the balance.
• Black Clipping: I wanted to accentuate the contrast and make the area around the face darker, to draw attention only to the highlights.
• Shadow Tones: Lets you control a little more in detail the transition from light to shadow. In this case, I altered slightly that transition in the face.
• Light Tones: It allows only the highlights to become brighter. With this setting I wanted to add a surreal touch, a dreamy effect to the photo.

The final step was to export to JPEG and apply the Unsharp Mask filter in Photoshop CS5. I like better the result that I get instead of using the built-in sharpening in Lightroom. The result of the edition can be appreciated if we compare the initial and final images:

How can you learn to use on setting or the other? Practice. There’s no other answer.

Quería que fuera una foto mía. Fue un placer descubrir que yo también podía ser parte de mis propias fotos.

Las marcas del tiempo en la piel.

Ese anillo, ese corte, ese golpe, ese beso.

Este proyecto 365 ha sido toda una experiencia. Momentos flojos, momentos brillantes.

Solo hay que dejarse llevar.

Hay momentos en los cuales se toca el fondo. Afortunadamente, todo vuelve a subir.

Tan amarillo, tan natural, tan distinto.

Eitan y sus primeras palabras.

Su repertorio aumenta cada día y es hermoso verlo crecer lentamente.

Noche de calor, nada mejor que una birra.

Hermosos recuerdos de noches de NBA junto a Magic Johnson y Michael Jordan.

No es la primera vez que hago referencia a la Torre Oscura de Stephen King en este 365.
